If empirical testing is less relevant to your interests, choose the first book. Some material appears in both. The longest chapter (230 pages) summarises hundreds of empirical studies 1927-2015 taken from 57 books, 52 journals, 15 PhD theses, and other sources such as conference reports and websites.
